Siemens Obsolescence: How to Plan for the Modernization of Your Industrial Facilities Today

15 Jun 26Process Control/ Motion Control

The industrial automation landscape is changing rapidly. Siemens is now accelerating the modernization of its Automation & HMI portfolio with several major announcements: the phase-out of the SIMATIC S7-300 and ET200M, the transition from Comfort Panels to Unified, and the arrival of the new SIMATIC S7-1200 G2.

For manufacturers, the challenge is clear: they must act now to avoid the risks associated with obsolescence, secure their supply chains, and prepare for facilities that are more efficient, more connected, and more secure.

1️⃣ S7-300 & ET200M: The End of an Era Is Nearing

SIMATIC S7-300 and ET200M components have not been available as new parts since October 2025. They will remain available only as spare parts until their final discontinuation, scheduled for 2033.

To replace these legacy architectures, Siemens now recommends:

  • SIMATIC S7-1500
  • ET200SP
  • ET200MP

These new platforms offer:

✅ Improved performance,
✅ Better scalability,
✅ Reduced cabinet space requirements,
✅ And an optimized service life for modern industrial installations.

2️SIMATIC HMI: Migration to Unified Comfort Panels

Siemens is accelerating the transition of its operator interfaces to the new generation of Unified Comfort Panels. Several legacy product lines will be phased out gradually between 2025 and 2027:

  • Comfort Panels
  • Comfort PRO
  • SIPLUS & INOX Panels
  • Mobile Panels
  • Outdoor Panels

The new Unified panels are now Siemens’ strategic platform for future HMI developments.

Why switch to Unified?

✅ A more modern and powerful graphical interface
✅ Enhanced cybersecurity
✅ Advanced integration with TIA Portal
✅ Modern web technologies
✅ Greater scalability for your future digital projects
✅ Prepared for tomorrow’s industry standards

The Siemens schedule includes, among other things:

  • Gradual announcements of a phase-out starting in 2026,
  • Price increases on certain older product lines,
  • Then the permanent discontinuation of several HMI product lines.

3️⃣SIMATIC S7-1200: Prepare for the transition to S7-1200 G2

Siemens also announced the natural evolution of the SIMATIC S7-1200 series into the new S7-1200 G2 generation.

The official announcement of the discontinuation of the current S7-1200 CPUs is scheduled for November 2026, with new units available through 2027 and spare parts support through 2036.

The Benefits of the S7-1200 G2

✅ Improved CPU performance (multi-core)
✅ More memory and scalability
✅ Enhanced cybersecurity
✅ Integrated dual PROFINET ports
✅ Advanced motion control functions
✅ Expanded compatibility with the S7-1500 ecosystem
✅ Reduced space requirements in control cabinets
✅ Modern connectivity: Web API, NFC, OPC UA

Siemens also offers dedicated migration tools to facilitate:

  • Compatibility check,
  • Hardware migration,
  • Software conversion in TIA Portal.

Why act now?

Waiting for a breakdown or a disruption in supply is no longer an option.

Planning your migrations in advance allows you to:

✅ Secure your critical facilities,
✅ Better manage modernization budgets,
✅ Plan for scheduled downtime,
✅ Improve industrial cybersecurity,
✅ And confidently prepare for your future Industry 4.0 projects.
