Following changes in legislation and the desire for stricter environmental management to ensure viable disposal solutions, this historical waste needs to be properly characterized. The objectives of the project are to analyze and limit the environmental impact of radioactive waste.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Supported by the Technord group and <a href=\"http:\/\/deltabeam.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DSI<\/a>, the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mobile-radiography.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Syscade<\/a> <\/em>project is developing a mobile system for characterizing waste from both a physical and radiological point of view.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"744\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Syscade-2.png\" alt=\"logo Syscade project with Technord\" class=\"wp-image-25959893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.technord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Syscade-2.png 744w, https:\/\/www.technord.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Syscade-2-480x123.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 744px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Physical characterization is carried out using X-ray images to identify the nature and size of the waste in the storage drum; non-destructive radiological characterization is carried out using high-resolution HPGe probes.<\/p>\n\n<p>DSI and Technord&#8217;s challenge was to pack all the necessary technologies into a 40-inch container inside a mobile truck.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solution proposed by Technord :<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Technord&#8217;s teams worked on the development of a <strong>compact, 100% automated system<\/strong>, including a control and command room for the operator.<\/p>\n\n<p>The architecture proposed for the Syscade project incorporates a Rockwell Automation solution for drum conveying and control of analysis systems.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>technical solution<\/strong> we have implemented ensures :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>drum conveying<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reading and identification of drums using a QR-Code linked to a database<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drum weighing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>opening and closing of measuring room doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>start and stop x-ray and gamma-ray measurements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>To achieve this management, we carried out the studies, supplied and programmed :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an ESXI server with Rockwell&#8217;s FTView supervisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a Control Logix Rokwell controller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rockwell kinetix servo drives for table axis control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rockwell Powerflex variable speed drives for conveyor management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Festo drives for x-ray shutter and door management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keyence sensor for barcode label reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This project mobilized teams from both our <strong>Process Control department <\/strong>and our <strong>Low Voltage department<\/strong> (electrical design, production of electrical cabinets and wiring in the 40-foot mobile container).<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Project profit :<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The implementation of a 100% automated control system for the analysis of radioactive waste drums enables :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prevent drums from being opened, thus avoiding any risk of radioactive contamination for the operator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rapid inspection (less than a minute)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>barrel inspection from all angles thanks to the barrel rotation system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The results of the Syscade project help to analyze and limit the environmental impact of radioactive waste.
